The Spies of Harrodsburg

Elizabeth (Poage) Thomas told Lyman C. Draper: “In 1780 when Martins’s and Ruddell’s Stations were taken, the spies of Harrodsburg were on the lookout - and if the enemy were found to be coming, the Harrodsburg people determined to waylay the Ind’s ...and prevent their passage.History Quarterly of The Filson Club, Vol. 3, No. 5, Oct. 1929.

We have found other statements referring to the “spies” and their efforts here on the frontier for the safe keeping of all of Kentucky. This group will function as a separate “club” of re-enactors with the year 1780 (making reference to the above quote) as it’s focal point of dress and gear. They will assemble here in the fort on Friday evening one weekend a month and have excursions out into the local countryside on Saturday. They may go to places like Shawnee Springs, Fountain Blue and the historic Salt River right here close to Fort Harrod just as the “Spies” might have in 1780. The first weekend is set for November 19-21 and will be the only one we do this year but will start back up in April and have them every month.
